All Students are requested to go through this notification with due diligence and care. Ragging in any form is illegal. Under no circumstances will the IIT Mandi tolerate any form of ragging. To ensure compliance, Director, IIT Mandi, has appointed the following
Students may contact immediately any member of the Anti-Ragging Committee and report any instance of ragging without any hesitation. All information shall be kept confidential.
What constitutes Ragging?
Ragging constitutes one or more of any of the following acts
- Any conduct by any student or students in speech or in writing or by any action calculated to tease, hurt, injure or offend any fresher or any other student
- Any rowdy or intimidatory behavior by any student or students that causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship, physical or psychological damage or instills fear and anxiety in any fresher or any other student
- Asking a student to do or to perform any act under duress which (s)he may not otherwise ordinarily consent to do and which produces a sense of shame or anguish or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the body and mind of such freshers or any other student
- Any act by senior student(s) that prevents, disrupts or disturbs the regular academic tasks assigned to an individual or a group of students
- Subjecting any fresher or any other student(s) to financial extortion or forcible expenditure
- Any act of physical abuse including all variants of sexual abuse, homosexual assaults, stripping, forcing obscene and lewd acts, gestures, causing bodily harm or any other danger to the health and wellbeing of the person
- Any act or abuse through speech, emails, post, public insults that includes deriving perverted pleasure, vicarious or sadistic thrill from actively or passively participating in the discomfiture caused to any fresher or to any other student.
- Any act that affects the mental health and self-confidence of a fresher or any other student with or without an intent to derive sadistic pleasure or display of muscle power or authority by a student over any fresher or any other student
In short, any attempt by student(s), in speech, word or deed, with or without mala fide intent, and which has the effect of lowering the dignity and self-esteem of junior or other fellow student(s), or causes bodily and/or mental harm and injury to junior or other fellow student(s) shall be construed as ragging and shall attract the penal provisions of the laws in force. Likewise, any person aiding or abetting ragging, whether actively or passively, shall be held culpable.
Action in the Event of Ragging
- The Honorable Supreme Court of India has decreed that the punishment to be meted in proven cases of ragging has to be exemplary and justifiably harsh to act as a deterrent against recurrence of such incidents. Therefore,
the Anti-Ragging Committee may, depending on the nature and gravity of the guilt established, award, to those found guilty, one or more of the following punishments
- Suspension from attending classes and academic privileges
- Withholding/ withdrawing scholarship/ fellowship and other benefits
- Debarring from appearing in any test/ examination or other evaluation process
- Withholding results
- Debarring from representing the institution in any regional, national or international meet, tournament, youth festival, etc.
- Suspension/ expulsion from the hostel
- Cancellation of admission
- Rustication from the institution for period ranging from one to four semesters
- Expulsion from the institution and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution for a specified period
- In instances where the persons committing or abetting the act of ragging are not readily identifiable, the institution may resort to collective punishment
